Compassion Mariakani Documentary
Compassion is an international Christian child development and advocacy charity. Their focus is the alleviation of children from extreme poverty via sponsorship programmes. One of their recent initiatives is to get churches in the UK to partner with churches in the developing world. They asked us to produce a video case study to advertise the initiative.
Swerve was commissioned to create a 20-minute documentary, and a shorter 6-minute promotional video. Travelling to Kenya alongside Vicar Paul Perkin and his wife Christine from St. Marks Battersea in London, the goal was to capture a three-day visit to Mariakani Baptist Church, conduct interviews with families in the community, and the explore the feasibility of a church-to-church partnership.
Swerve created a hugely successful documentary, which reflected both the life and exuberance of the church and community in Kenya, but also the realities of extreme poverty. The film resulted in the church-to-church partnership going ahead, with many children being sponsored and the film being used to advertise church-to-church partnerships across the UK.

“We love the vibrancy of the video! It's really attention grabbing and a very different approach to run-of-the-mill promotional pieces, which is exactly what we were looking for. Swerve has a “can do” attitude and is willing to go the extra mile. They were always contactable when we needed them, flexible (even when our brief changed somewhat!) and gave helpful advice throughout the project which was finished remarkably quickly.”
